What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic (lifelong) inflammatory skin condition predominantly affecting the central face, encompassing the cheeks, nose, and area between the brows. Rosacea can present in several ways including redness, the presence of broken capillaries, acne and sometimes thickening of the skin on the nose.
It can affect the eyes, causing irritation, dryness, and in severe cases, vision problems.
Rosacea commonly impacts individuals aged 30 to 60, especially those with fair skin, although it may be overlooked in individuals with skin of colour due to challenges in detecting redness. The exact cause of rosacea is still uncertain, but its development is thought to involve a combination of genetic, environmental, and vascular factors. Additionally, an altered microbiome in both the skin and gut is considered a potential contributing factor.
Rosacea typically follows a pattern of flare-ups and periods of remission. Factors that can trigger flare-ups include; UV radiation, heat (such as hot showers or saunas), physical exercise, psychological stress, exposure to air pollution, certain medications (especially those causing vasodilation), spicy foods, alcohol, and smoking.
Managing the condition involves a combination of lifestyle modifications, topical creams, appropriate skin care, medications and, in some cases, oral antibiotics or laser therapy.
At CPSC, a significant number of rosacea patients seek laser treatment. Our DermaV laser treatment can be highly effective in reducing redness and flushing, especially for visible vessels, in patients suitable for this approach. Alternatively, we can offer guidance and prescribe topical treatments when they are more suitable or as a preliminary step before considering laser therapy.
