Lipoma Removal @ CPSC

A lipoma is a non- cancerous tumour made up of fat cells, is it usually dome-shaped or egg-shaped lump about 2–10 cm in diameter. It feels soft and smooth and is easily moved under the skin with the finger and it may have a rubbery or doughy consistency. It slowly grows under the skin in the subcutaneous tissue. A person may have a single lipoma or may have many lipomas. They are very common.

The cause of lipomas is unknown. It is possible there may be genetic involvement as many patients with lipomas come from a family with a history of these tumours. Sometimes an injury such as a blunt blow to part of the body may trigger the growth of a lipoma.

Removal of Lipoma

Generally, removal of a lipoma can be done at Central Perth Skin Clinic under local anesthetic and with a small incision. You may be required to have an ultrasound of the lump before removal if there is concern as to the diagnosis or to define the size and location with regard to adjacent or deep structures. Some lipomas will not be able to be removed in our clinic and this will be discussed with you. Our doctors are happy to provide referrals to have this done in the appropriate setting.

It is important to see one of our doctors for an appointment prior to booking in for removal for these reasons.

When a lipoma has been removed, sutures will be placed to close the small incision, and they will generally be removed 7 to 10 days after the procedure depending on the location and size.

Please note: Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks, so before proceeding, if you have any concerns, please seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

How much does it cost to remove a lipoma?

For removal of a lipoma, the fee can vary depending on the size, location and number of lipoma to be removed and is in addition to any appointment fee. Fees will be discussed prior to proceeding to removal.
